Hazardous Materials Program

Hazardous Materials Program

This program ensures the implementation of the Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act (EPCRA) in New Mexico. EPCRA gives states and local communities a structure within which to document hazardous chemicals stored in their communities. The local preparedness team documents over 20,000 hazardous materials storage locations within New Mexico annually. In addition, the Local Preparedness Team administers the Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness Grant (HMEP). New Mexico received this funding from the USDOT’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration. The team funds local hazardous materials response training and planning, typically flowing through $100,000 each year to local governments and fire departments. Community members can support hazardous materials preparedness by getting involved with their Local Emergency Planning Committee. Contact your local office of emergency management for more information.
