This weekend marks National Wildfire Community Preparedness Day
Santa Fe, NM – On Friday April 30 and Saturday May 1, representatives from several state and federal fire-management agencies will host public education events across Catron County. These events mark Wildfire Community Preparedness Day, and discussions will focus on the county’s ready-set-go program, how to prepare a Go Bag, and how to recover after a wildfire, among other topics. Local fire departments will also use these events to recruit volunteers.
Friday’s event will take place in the Fair Building in Reserve, and Saturday’s will take place in the Pie Town park.
These events will have representatives from all 12 of the county’s volunteer fire departments, as well as the US Bureau of Land Management, the US Forestry Service, the NM State Forestry Division, the NM State Police, the NM Livestock Board, and the NM State Fire Marshal’s Office. Each of the county’s local fire departments will also host open houses at their stations where they will have more personalized fire-prevention information for their districts’ residents.
Earlier this week, members of the State Fire Marshal’s office and Catron County firefighters dropped off goody bags to all 135 students in Catron County Schools (pictures below). These packages included a variety of youth-focused education materials on preparing for and preventing wildfires.
