AmeriCorps volunteers available for flood debris cleanup

AmeriCorps Disaster Response Teams have been deployed to Chaves County to assist with critical cleanup needs following the October 2024 flooding event, at the request of the New Mexico Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM).

Volunteers from AmeriCorps are available to assist with flood debris clean up, including mucking and gutting, fence repair, sandbagging, roof tarping, or other cleanup activities during the final debris removal operations in Chaves County. Residents can call the state’s Disaster Case Management line at 505-670-4662 and select option 3 to request assistance from this team.

“Cleanup after a flooding event like the one we saw in October can be time consuming, but it is critical that it gets done, and it gets done correctly,” said DHSEM State Director Ali Rye. “We’re grateful for the partnerships that we have with local, county, and federal agencies who have helped us identify this need and provide this much needed assistance to residents.

DHSEM continues to offer debris removal through the end of February for residents of Chaves County who have flood debris remaining on their property. Residents do not need to call to schedule the debris removal but do need to place flood debris at their curb. Right of way debris removal will occur in zones, beginning on the north end of Chaves County and working south until Feb. 28. More information about the available debris removal service can be found on our website.
